Type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus is one of the most common conditions in the United States. Depending on the severity of a patient’s diabetes, one common treatment is insulin, which understandably is a treatment that frightens or annoys patients due to patients having to stick themselves with a needle to test their blood sugar and to inject themselves with insulin. Insulin is often prescribed to patients because doctors are not able to adequately address the underlying cause of diabetes, which is excessive weight
In our practice, we attempt to get diabetes under control primarily through lifestyle interventions first. We provide patient education in the form of appointments, educational pamphlets, and structured classes to show you how you can get control of your diabetes through losing weight and gaining muscle. With our help and a good faith effort, many patients may ideally find that they no longer need their insulin.
While insulin is prescribed to avoid increasing one’s risk of heart attack and stroke, many doctors forgot that insulin causes weight gain, and weight gain is also independently linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. We don’t believe in decreasing one’s risk of these complications through insulin and having it increased through weight gain. We believe in eliminating the root cause of diabetes and vascular complications and you will see that treatment philosophy illustrated in our approach.
